Pavement Preservation Demonstration Projects Using NCHRP Provisional Specification for Chip Seal and Microsurfacing

About the project

VDOT's Richmond District will construct a chip seal section and Hampton Roads District will construct a microsurfacing section with shoulders fog-sealed in the 2022 construction season following AASHTO's newly developed provisional specifications.  Each site will also have a control section that will be designed and produced in accordance with VDOT’s current specifications for these treatments.

The objective of this project is twofold: (i) to document the construction process and (ii) to monitor the short-term field performance of these sections to evaluate if the changes made to the specifications return any initial benefits to VDOT.
