Investigation of Calcined Clay in VDOT Concrete Mixtures

Project No: 130459

Target Completion Date: May 31, 2029 Structures

About the project

Challenges in the availability of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), particularly coal ash, are creating issues for concrete infrastructure construction and increasing the need for reliable alternative SCMs. Calcined clays offer a promising solution because they are widely available, can be produced cost-effectively, and can provide concrete with adequate mechanical and durability performance.

Building on previous VTRC research demonstrating the technical feasibility of calcined clay in VDOT concrete, this study will support practical implementation by characterizing a newly available Virginia-produced calcined clay that will be commercially offered as part of a limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) product. Characterization will include physical, chemical, and reactivity-based methods. The material will then be evaluated in representative VDOT concrete mixtures, assessing fresh properties, mechanical performance, and durability behavior. Practical considerations such as admixture selection and dosage will also be explored to achieve adequate workability and early-age strength development.

The project will deliver the performance data necessary to support implementation of calcined clays in VDOT concrete, reducing reliance on supply-chain-constrained conventional SCMs while supporting durable, cost-effective, and sustainable transportation infrastructure.
