Quality Assurance Testing and Monitoring of High-Performance Steel Bridge in Virginia

About the project

Blacksburg, Virginia, to the Smart Highway and Interstate 81 has been identified to be designed with HPS-70W steel. The objectives of this study are to perform a comprehensive laboratory metallurgical analysis of the base and weld metals and a comprehensive nondestructive evaluation of the bridge members during fabrication and in the field. Critical areas on the girders will be identified and instrumented do evaluate long-term performance. Additional instrumentation will be placed at key points on the bridge structure and monitored for long-term performance. A static and dynamic field test of the completed structure will be conducted for determination of overall bridge behavior.
