Pilot Implementation of a Resource Guide to Enhance Incorporation of Safety into the Regional Planning Process

Project No: 99049

Target Completion Date: November 30, 2011 Environment, Planning, and Economics

About the project:

This project is the implementation of a resource guide for integrating safety into the transportation planning process. It will use a Virginia metropolitan planning organization’s area as a pilot. Developed over a 30-month period in an earlier study, the resource guide contains various examples relating to safety planning integration. It is comparable to a reference manual or a textbook.

This research is expected to yield two deliverables: validation of portions of the resource guide and identification of portions of the guide that need improvement. Participants in this pilot will include representatives from the Federal Highway Administration’s Richmond pision, the Roanoke Valley Alleghany Regional Commission (RVARC) and VDOT’s Salem District, Traffic Engineering pision and Transportation Mobility Planning pision.

The pilot will focus on two issues of interest to RVARC: use of crash data for the cities of Roanoke and Salem and incorporating safety into the Peters Creek Hollins Community Plan.
