The City of Charlottesville seeks to install experimental treatments (i.e., pavement markings), including bike boxes and two-stage turn-queue boxes, to determine if they improve conditions for bicyclists without negatively affecting safety at the intersection of University Avenue and Rugby Road. This is a problematic location for cyclists approaching the University of Virginia's main campus.
The Virginia Department of Transportation, through its Virginia Center for Transportation Innovation and Research, will provide the city with research assistance for these experimental markings to satisfy the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) required experimentation process. This includes data collection and analysis, progress reports and a final report to FHWA.
This project will produce a summary of “lessons learned” regarding how best to deploy such innovative markings, which could be valuable to other Virginia localities seeking to accommodate bicycling.
