Field Testing of High-Binder Content Base Layer HMA Mixtures

Project No: 86358

Target Completion Date: August 20, 2010 Structures

About the project:

A previous laboratory study (VTRC 07-R15) indicated potential benefits from using asphalt layers containing a high binder content deep in the pavement structure. The same study also used the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide software to support conclusions of the laboratory study. This proposed study will attempt to place the base mixture containing asphalt content above optimum using Superpave Design in a pavement section and evaluate its behavior and performance.  A control section containing the optimum asphalt content will also be evaluated at the same location. Laboratory testing on the mixtures will include conventional volumetrics, gradation, permeability, fatigue, Tensile Strength Ratio, Hamburg rutting, dynamic modulus and binder recoveries. Field testing will include falling weight deflectometer testing at various stages of the construction.
