Evaluating Surface Characteristics of Dense Graded Asphalt Mixtures

Project No: 119604

Target Completion Date: April 20, 2023 Pavements

About the project:

class="ElementText">As asphalt mix design criteria evolves beyond prescriptive to performance-based specifications, traditional limits may be challenged in the pursuit of material durability.  As designers explore these limits, it's more important to understand how basic design criteria ultimately affects the comfort and safety of the public who travels over these mixes.

The objective of the research project is to establish a functional performance baseline for the Virginia's balanced mix design (BMD) trial mixes as constructed in the 2019 and 2020 construction seasons, as well as those to be constructed in the 2021construction season. While the exploration of traditional boundary criteria remains limited, a survey of early BMD trials alongside a suitable series of conventional mixtures will provide an opportunity to learn what measures can betaken during mix design stage to preserve or enhance the functional characteristics of asphalt mixtures.
