Effect of Cold Central Plant Recycled Asphalt Mixture Stockpiling on Mixture Performance

About the project:

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of stockpiling on a Cold Central Plant Recycled (CCPR) asphalt mixture with respect to laboratory performance and to investigate a potential laboratory simulation method for stockpiling. A plant-made CCPR asphalt mixture stockpile will be sampled at varying times and the change in mixture strength over time will be studied. Mechanistic tests will also be run to better understand the potential impacts on performance. Additionally, the CCPR asphalt mixture will be sampled and stored in buckets (or another method) and tested at the same intervals as the stockpile to see if stockpiling can be simulated in the laboratory for future projects. The outcomes of this study will inform any necessary changes to VDOT specification and/or appropriate laboratory simulation methods of CCPR asphalt mixture stockpiling.
