Bond Performance Expectations (and Requirements) for Hot Mix Asphalt Pavements

Project No: 87215

Target Completion Date: June 29, 2009 Structures

About the project:

This research aims to identify a test method and acceptance criteria for bonding of hot mix asphalt (HMA) layers.   It proposes to accomplish this through a phased process.  The first phase will address the growing percentage of HMA resurfacing projects that involve milled original surfaces.  In this phase, commonly used (and simple) tension and shear tests will be conducted to compare the bond strength of conventionally-tacked, non-tracking tack, and un-tacked interlayers for HMA resurfacing projects.  The second phase will critically review the bond testing procedure(s) and begin to develop a recommended performance test method and initial bond strength for use with a comprehensive performance specification for HMA construction.
