Balanced Mix Design for Surface Asphalt Mixtures: 2020 and 2021 Field Trials

Project No: 119857

Target Completion Date: March 20, 2023 Pavements

About the project:

class="ElementText">VDOT began the evaluation of Balanced Mix Design through field trials in 2019. The effort has continued with the construction of additional trials in 2020 and 2021. The objective of this project is to document and assess the 2020 and 2021 field trials constructed under VDOT’s Special Provision for Surface Mixtures Designed Using Performance Criteria and Special Provision for High Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) Content Surface Mixtures Designed Using Performance Criteria. This will continue the efforts began in 2019 to determine and quantify the impact of reheating and mixture volumetric changes in asphalt mixtures on BMD performance test results.

This study will document designs, locations, and other information; data collected from the trials will be analyzed; and lessons learned from all BMD field trials to date will be compiled. The analyses will address the application of the BMD concept, production variability, comparisons of mixture composition and performance, and differences in specimen test response with and without reheating of the loose mixture prior to fabrication for the mixtures included in the study. Results will provide a resource to evaluate the impact of performance specifications on the field performance of pavement surface mixes.
