Target Completion Date: September 30, 2011 Pavements
The primary objective of this research is to complete the testing of 12 additional asphalt mixes that VDOT’s Maintenance pision identified in 2008 to be among the most used contract items. This study directly supports implementation efforts currently under way to initiate statewide usage of the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide by 2013.
Findings from this study on the characterization of asphalt materials will provide necessary design parameters for the MEPDG software at input Level 2. The expected results of this project will improve the efficiency of flexible pavement designs in Virginia and result in more accurate predictions of maintenance and rehabilitation needs over the life of the pavement.
Results of this project will be compiled and presented in a form matching the MEPDG input format for use by VDOT pavement designers. The final report will also make recommendations regarding the need for any additional testing or revisions to test methods.
