When and How to Consider Connected Vehicles in Virginia Transportation Planning Processes

Project No: 109945

Target Completion Date: March 29, 2019 Environment, Planning, and Economics

About the project:

The purpose of this research is to identify ways in which Virginia might alter existing planning tools to consider the increased market penetration of various levels of connected vehicles (CV).  Following a literature review of how various levels of functionality of connected vehicles might impact the planning process, a case study will be developed that illustrates how urban travel demand models (or other modeling processes) might be modified to consider CVs.  As CV technology is still in the early development stage  some may suggest that any modeling at this point is premature.  However, long-range transportation planners are being asked to consider potential impacts of CVs now—and thus, this study attempts to develop some ways to evaluate those impacts.
