VDOT Implementation Software Issues for AASHTO LRFD Design

Project No: 78966

Target Completion Date: January 14, 2008 Pavements

About the project:

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is currently scheduled to complete the transition from allowable stress design (ASD) to load and resistance factor design (LRFD) by 2007 as mandated by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). For steel bridge structures, the difficulties of the transition from ASD to LRFD are extensive. Not only must the changes in loading provisions be incorporated into design, but also significant changes in resistance provisions must be included. Moreover, certain aspects of the design of steel girder bridges are sufficiently complex that obtaining lowest cost designs may require several different preliminary designs, even for relatively simple structures, which can only be achieved if adequate software is available for design. It is the intent of this study to identify, evaluate and quality assure candidate software packages.
