The team of Virginia Tech, the Virginia Center for Transportation, Innovation and Research (VCTIR), Intelligent Engineering (Canada) Limited, and CANAM-MANAC Group Inc. proposes to build a replacement bridge using the steel-polymer composite Sandwich Panel System (SPS). The proposed design uses transversely oriented SPS prefabricated deck plate supported on steel girders. Each prefabricated deck plate is 3 m in width and consists of two steel plates bonded to a compact polyurethane elastomer core. The elastomer, is a two-part liquid, is injected into closed cavities formed by the steel faceplates and perimeter bars. The SPS bridge system appears to be an attractive alternative for new or replacement bridge constructionThe system is light and simple to construct lending to construction of large modules in the shop. Speed of erection is a key advantage of the system, requiring only days to complete the superstructure.
