Use of Geosynthetics in Secondary and Subdivision Roads

About the project:

Geosynthetics have been used in pavement construction for decades. It provides the function of separation between the subgrade and base layer. Depending on the subgrade condition it can also provide reinforcement to the pavement structure. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) encourages the use of geosynthetics in the current design guide when soft and yielding soils are encountered. VDOT, however,  does not have any programmed approach to give credit for the use of geosynthetics in these pavements that may result in a savings in aggregate or asphalt thickness.This research effort will try to quantify the benefits of using geosynthetics in the secondary and subpision roads in Virginia. A laboratory evaluation of geosynthetics use in pavement layer followed by field verification is proposed.
