Updating Truck Factors for Pavement Design in Virginia Using Weigh-In-Motion Data

Project No: 91023

Target Completion Date: April 30, 2009 Pavements

About the project:

VDOT has recently installed weigh-in-motion (WIM) devices at 12 locations around Virginia that measure the loads actually applied by vehicles in the travel lanes.  This study will use this newly available data to update VDOT’s truck factors for use in pavement designs.

This will be accomplished by taking the axle load as measured by the in-lane WIM sensors and converting it to a series of truck factors following the AASHTO methodology.  Revised truck factors will be calculated for the two truck categories VDOT currently uses and also for each of the FHWA truck classifications.
