The Hawthorne Street Bridge Rehabilitation Utilizing an FRP Bridge Deck System

Project No: 69583

Target Completion Date: April 25, 2007 Pavements

About the project:

The objective of this proposed program is to implement a lightweight FRP bridge deck system in the Hawthorne St. Bridge, ensuring the safe passage of emergency vehicles within the City of Covington and preserving this Historic structure. A secondary, but equally important feature of this proposed program is to advance an FRP deck system from the Strongwell Corp.  We estimate that the target cost will be less than other U.S. FRP deck systems, making this deck system more cost competitive with conventional steel reinforced concrete decks.   There is a need within the Commonwealth to repair and rehabilitate old, historically significant through-truss bridges with a lightweight, durable bridge deck system. The development of the Strongwell FRP bridge deck system will provide VDOT bridge engineers a lightweight option in the rehabilitation of bridge decks.
