The Effectiveness of Deer Advisory Messages on VDOT's Changeable Message Signs:Phase II

Project No: 110606

Target Completion Date: October 1, 2018 Environment, Planning, and Economics

About the project

Following recommendations from an earlier VTRC study, in 2015 VDOT began to post animal advisory messages on the changeable message signs along I-64 in the Afton Mountain area in response to observations of frequent deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) and high roadside deer activity in this area, particularly in the fall months. A followup limited scope study was recently conducted that suggested this approach might have had a positive impact on vehicle speeds and DVCs. The purpose of the study is to conduct more extensive analysis of speed and crash data on this segment of I-64 to more conclusively determine the effects that the deer advisory messages have on reducing DVCs.
