Synthesis of VDOT Historic Bridge Survey, Review, and Management Information

Project No: 116293

Target Completion Date: April 30, 2022 Environment, Planning, and Economics

About the project:

Since the 1970s, VDOT, through the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC), has conducted studies to identify and manage its historically significant bridges (i.e., eligible for the National Register of Historic Places), including statewide thematic studies and the development of a statewide historic bridge management plan that is updated periodically. In addition, specific projects relating to individual bridges are covered by separate guidance documents, cultural resource reviews, Memoranda of Agreement (MOA), or Programmatic Agreement (PA) documents filed in various VDOT offices. However, there is no one document containing consolidated and cross-referenced information on this material. The proposed project will identify and assemble data on all of these studies, reviews, management plans, and agreements. This is intended as an ongoing, periodically-updated document that will contain comparative information on all historic bridge survey, review, agreement, and management projects, and can be revised and expanded as needed.
