Punching Shear Capacity of Thin UHPC Plates

Project No: 71179

Target Completion Date: June 29, 2005 Structures

About the project:

The Virginia Department of Transportation is planning the construction of a bridge using Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) in the bridge girders. In support of this work, and to aid in the further optimization of bridge girders using UHPC, it is proposed herein to investigate the punching shear capacity of UHPC plates. Because of the extremely high compressive strength of UHPC (25 to 30 ksi), to optimize the girder shapes, it is helpful to minimize the depth of the top flange. If a top flange is to also serve as a riding surface, as in deck bulb-tees or the MIT-proposed double-tee shape, then the top flange must be evaluated for its punching shear capacity.
