Performance of Bridge-Deck Overlay Systems: Phase I

Project No: 105230

Target Completion Date: May 15, 2017 Pavements

About the project:

style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Overlaying existing bridge decks has been the major preservation method of such elements in Virginia. Several overlay types are available, each having different benefits and limitations that may influence their selection.

Chapter 32 of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Structure and Bridge pision Manual contains guidance for the decision-making process related to structure maintenance and repair. However, Chapter 32 contains limited guidance regarding existing first-generation overlays and subsequent repair strategies.

As a first step toward formulating improved guidance for preserving bridge decks and overlays, this study will conduct an extensive search of VDOT’s construction records, bridge inventory databases (inventory data, general condition rating data and element inspection data) and bridge inspection reports to objectively assess the past performance of the types of overlays VDOT commonly uses.
