Historic roads—those eligible for, or listed on the National Register—may require special planning, design, and management considerations to avoid negatively impacting their significant elements. This project will identify various issues, including planning and maintenance activities, that can affect historic roads, and will develop guidelines for appropriate management practices for these historic resources. These will include design, construction, and maintenance guidelines that (a) can be used for advance planning purposes, (b) will follow current standards in safety, and (c) will not adversely impact the resource’s historic integrity. This project will include case studies of several historic roads in Virginia where maintenance and repair/improvement design practices have become issues.
