Since February 2002, VTTI has conducted research on the design, development, and testing of an intersection violation warning system. By examining the feasibility of both infrastructure-only and cooperative systems VTTI has learned that these types of systems are feasible and relatively near-term deployable. But, critical tasks remain. Tasks to be undertaken in this study are:
1. Baseline infrastructure-based live intersection data collection; and,
2. Baseline in-vehicle intersection data collection. The direct benefit of this study is the contribution to the knowledge base of intersection approach behavior at stop-controlled intersections. The study will quantitatively characterize the intersection approach profiles across a variety of environmental conditions and driver types as well as identify the differences in approach behavior between compliant and violating drivers. It will also contribute to our understanding of interesection approaches and, in particular, violations.
