Investigation of Using Tear-Off Roofing Shingles in Asphalt Concrete

About the project:

A previous VCTIR research study indicated that manufactured shingle waste can be used successfully in asphalt surface mixes.  Based on the success of that project, this follow-up VCTIR study will investigate using tear-off shingle waste – created during roof replacement – in asphalt concrete.  The potential exists for cost savings since waste shingles have considerable asphalt binder that is required in asphalt concrete, now selling at a premium price.  This study will determine whether durable mixes containing the shingles can be produced, since the shingle binder has aged and stiffened considerably from many years of exposure to the environment. Lab tests that will be performed include binder recovery and grading, fatigue, rut, and tensile strength ratio.  An installation of field test sections is also planned.
