Evaluation of Truck Lane Restrictions, Phase II

Project No: 87969

Target Completion Date: October 30, 2009 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

In 2007, VTRC evaluated truck lane restrictions already in place in Virginia.  While that study provided insight into the safety and operational impacts of truck lane restrictions, it also identified several areas where more research would help improve the understanding of the performance of these restrictions.  New state legislation, which took effect in July 2007, modified the speed-based restrictions on two-lane directional interstate segments.  The specific objectives of this project are to determine the safety and operational impacts of the new truck lane restriction legislation and to assess whether the existing restrictions have a negative impact on interstates with three or more lanes per direction and volumes greater than 10,000 vehicles per lane per day.  In both cases, only interstate facilities will be examined.
