Evaluation of the Construction and Initial Condition of Bonded and Unbonded Hydraulic Cement Concrete Overlays Placed on a Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement on U.S. 58

Project No: 00038

Target Completion Date: June 27, 2014 Structures

About the project:

This project will evaluate bonded and unbonded hydraulic cement concrete (HCC) overlays to be constructed on westbound U.S. 58 in Southampton County to determine if they are a cost-effective way to extend the service life of existing continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP).

Bonded HCC overlays should be an alternative to asphalt overlays, and unbonded HCC overlays should be an alternative to replacing deep sections of asphalt. Both overlays should be an alternative to concrete pavement replacement.

The project team will analyze existing pavement condition and falling-weight deflectometer deflection data, document overlay pavement designs, monitor construction and evaluate the initial condition of the bonded and unbounded HCC overlays. After the overlay construction, weigh-in-motion sensors will be placed in both lanes near the center of the bonded overlay to provide traffic data. A report will summarize the construction and initial condition of the pavement and overlays.
