Evaluation of Crash Rates and Causal Factors for High Risk Locations on Rural and Urban Two-Lane Highways in Virginia

Project No: 80355

Target Completion Date: September 15, 2008 Environment, Planning, and Economics

About the project:

The purpose of this research is to identify causal factors of crashes on two-lane highways and corresponding effective countermeasures that will significantly reduce these crashes. The scope of the research will be limited to two-lane highways in Virginia. This project will identify stretches of two-lane highways with statistically high crash and fatality rates. Then, using these sites, causal factors will be identified. The research team will then investigate and identify several appropriate countermeasures that will significantly reduce these crashes. It is expected that a second phase of the study will implement some of these countermeasures and evaluate their effectiveness in reducing crashes on two-lane highways.
