Development of a Simplified Analysis for Corroded Steel Beam Ends
Project No: 114324
Target Completion Date: October 25, 2021 Structures
About the project:
Leaking deck joints can subject steel beams to accelerated corrosion from excessive accumulation of moisture and chlorides in a localized area. These joints are typically located near the beam ends at the bearing areas, which is a critical area where the reaction forces of bridge girders are transferred to the bearings and subsequently the bridge foundation. There are few guidelines given to assess the capacity of beams with section loss, particularly in bearing locations. This research will address this need by investigating the load carrying capacity of members with varying amounts of localized section loss at their bearing locations.
