Design of High Modulus- High Binder Asphalt Layers

Project No: 75397

Target Completion Date: December 31, 2006 Structures

About the project:

High modulus-high binder asphalt (HMHBA) layers are used successfully in Europe. They are used to provide long lasting pavements (perpetual pavements). Perpetual pavements have HMHBA bottom and intermediate layers that resist cracking and deformation and therefore last a long time. The top layer is replaced as needed but lasts a long time because of the support of the lower layers. The life cost for perpetual pavements should be much less than for other asphalt pavements. Designs for HMHBA layers need to be developed to allow for the construction of perpetual pavements.
