Continuing Performance of Warm-Mix Asphalt in Virginia

Project No: 101903

Target Completion Date: June 30, 2015 Pavements

About the project:

The purpose of this project is to collect information on the material properties and performance for existing warm-mix asphalt (WMA) installations in Virginia. This data will assist the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in its ongoing evaluations of the lifetime performance of these sections.

The researcher will take field cores, evaluate the sites and conduct laboratory testing to obtain the necessary data for each WMA site after five years of service. This will be combined with information collected during construction and the first two years of service to determine the five-year performance of each site.

Several additional WMA sites also will be identified to add to the pool of locations and subsequently tested through field cores, visual assessment and lab evaluation.

This is the fourth in a series of research projects involving the use of warm-mix asphalt since VDOT installed its first trial WMA sections in 2006 to evaluate its long-term performance.
