Characteristics of Hydraulic Cements, Supplementary Cementitious Materials and Other Mineral Admixtures Used in Concrete

Project No: 90694

Target Completion Date: August 31, 2014 Structures

About the project:

This project will assess available cementitious materials used to form the binding matrix of hydraulic cement concrete that VDOT uses so to determine their types and sources. VCTIR will couple this information with market forecasts to predict future trends that will affect these materials.  The researchers will also assess the impact on VDOT’s business of the changes envisioned in these cementitious materials and the need for further research.

After this study, if VDOT deems it of sufficient importance, VCTIR will initiate a second phase of this work on selected samples of the varied materials that represent the the broad range of characteristics available, using advanced technologies to provide a more complete picture of their nature and performance. VDOT can then use the knowledge gained from these projects to revise and update its specifications and to develop guidance on the evaluation, selection and use of these materials for its applications.
