Bridge Beams and Substructure with Self-Consolidating Concrete

Project No: 91013

Target Completion Date: February 29, 2016 Structures

About the project:

The purpose of this study is to develop an innovative, cost-effective, safe and aesthetically pleasing self-consolidating concrete (SCC) for a bridge structure.

SCC mixtures that are expected to be uniform and robust will be developed and tested for the precast and cast-in-place applications.  They then will be placed in the beams and substructure of a bridge structure.

The candidate bridge structure is on Nimmo Parkway over West Neck Creek in Virginia Beach.  It has 18 89-foot spans and is 104 feet wide.

The prestressed beams will be cast using SCC at the precast plant, and the pile bents and abutments will include cast-in-place SCC.
