Analysis of Full-Depth Reclamation Trial Sections in Virginia

Full-depth reclamation is an increasingly common technology that can extend the service life of pavement structures and stretch available funding for pavement rehabilitation. Many other state transportation departments have successfully used this type of pavement rehabilitation, which rebuilds old pavements by recycling the existing roadway. However, the results of structural characterization vary greatly, and currently there is no accepted value of structural capacity that VDOT engineers can use for future pavement designs. 

The work proposed in this study will benefit VDOT by assessing the pavement structural capacity for the full-depth reclamation trial sections constructed during the summer of 2008. It will also provide a means for evaluating future full-depth reclamation designs by 1993 AASHTO and MEPDG-based designs.  Finally, this study will recommend to VDOT where it can use this technology most effectively and summarize specifications used by other state DOTs.
