A Demonstration Project to Assess Aggregate Fractionation and Surface Gritting for Stone Matrix Asphalt

Project No: 76328

Target Completion Date: June 25, 2007 Structures

About the project:

The project proposed will explore the costs and benefits of aggregate fractionation for mix production, and surface gritting for functional improvement of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). The demonstration will construct two projects, side-by-side (or end-to-end). One project will conform to the requirements of VDOT’s current special provision for SMA. The second project will apply a “German” practice that involves rigorous requirements on how source aggregates are screened/separated, stored, and introduced into the mix. The “German” mix will be placed with a tamping-bar paver, and both mixes will have sections with grit (coated & uncoated) applied to designated portions of the surface. The grit application will permit a comparison of relative friction, glare, permeability, and general aesthetics. This proposal addresses a phase 1 of research, which focuses on proof-of-concept. As warranted, a second phase will pursue broader application of fractionation and gritting.
