Motorists' Impression of the HOV Signs on I-66: Final Report

Report No: 84-R29

Published in 1984

About the report:

This study showed that virtually everyone using 1-66 knew what the abbreviation H0V meant. The media blitz carried out by the Department to inform Northern Virginians of the use and meaning of H0V appeared to have reached fewer than half of the respondents, since more than 44% said that they had first became aware of the term during a trip down 1-66. There was some indication that many of the motorists ticketed for being on the facility illegally may have been ignorant of the meaning of HOV. A number of respondents said that a continuation of the publicity, including but not limited to newspaper and TV ads, and enclosing H0V information in vehicle registration renewals were necessary.
