Ultra-High Performance Concrete Overlays in Virginia

Project No: 128208

Target Completion Date: June 30, 2028 Structures

About the project:

Bridge deck deterioration is a major concern in infrastructure maintenance, primarily caused by corrosion of reinforcement due to chloride intrusion, environmental factors, and traffic-induced wear. Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a promising material for bridge deck overlays due to its superior durability, low permeability, and crack control properties. This study builds upon previous research comparing different fiber-reinforced concretes (FRCs) namely, Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC), Very High-Performance Concrete (VHPC), and UHPC. Based on the findings, UHPC has been identified as one of the suitable materials for further study and field implementation.  In this study, UHPC overlays will be installed and performance monitored for at least a year.
