Target Completion Date: October 31, 2024 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering
A recently completed VTRC project entitled “Supporting Transportation System Management and Operations Using IoT Technology” reviewed a variety of low power, wide area network (LPWAN) Internet of Things (IoT) communications technologies to see if any may be viable options for traffic operations applications. That study recommended conducting a field test of LPWAN technologies under different conditions and configurations. Considering the existing services, devices, and practices that are commercially available, two LPWAN technologies, LoRaWAN and NB-IoT, were recommended for further testing. This Phase II project will assess the performance of both communications technologies and their feasibility using pedestrian counting as a test case. The performance of the systems will be quantitatively assessed using measures including system uptime, data transmission success ratio, data latency, and power consumption. Impacts of deployment factors like mounting height and weather conditions will also be examined. Findings from this project could help VDOT better understand the technical features and limitations when such LPWAN technologies are deployed.
