The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) uses sounding to identify delaminated concrete on columns and caps. VDOT then removes the delaminated concrete, which is usually of poor quality and chloride contaminated. This project will compare various repair scenarios and develop documents and guidelines that will help VDOT determine how much concrete to remove using hydro-demolition, how to replace it with quality concrete on the whole surface and explore the benefits of galvanic cathodic protection or impressed current cathodic protection on substructure repair. This work will incorporate both laboratory and field elements. In the laboratory, concrete specimens will be prepared, and properties will be measured to support the field work. In the field the protective systems will be applied and monitored over a period of time. Comparative cost estimates will be generated from the field portion of this study, which will be performed on five different bridges along I-64 between Richmond and Charlottesville.
