Virginia has set up connected-vehicle test sites in Northern Virginia and on Virginia’s Smart Road. They allow the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to determine its most appropriate role and measure connected-vehicle benefits.
This project will move these investments to the next level and focus on developing device hardware, software platforms and applications. It also will recruit vehicle fleets and drivers and install connected-vehicle and data-acquisition systems in the vehicles. The work will prepare VDOT to respond to a likely U.S. Department of Transportation request for proposals for a connected-vehicle pilot program.
As connected vehicles gain wider use, various vendors will emerge, as the architecture and environment for Virginia’s connected corridor are designed to attract their involvement. This strategy will make Virginia more attractive for firms to develop and test connected-vehicle solutions and position the corridor as the predominant early deployment site.
