Traveler Information for the Commericial Vehicle Operations Community

Project No: 110698

Target Completion Date: October 8, 2019 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

Commercial vehicles traveling on the state’s roadway system frequently become a challenge for roadways with restrictive geometric features. Virginia currently manages oversize/overweight loads through the Department of Motor Vehicles’ (DMV’s) Oversize/Overweight (OS/OW) routing program. However, many secondary roads do not have formal restrictions and yet possess geometric characteristics that would make them less desirable as truck routes. The primary goal of this project is to investigate methods to improve traveler information specifically targeted at the Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO) community.

The research team proposes to undertake the following tasks:

• Review existing CVO traveler information technologies and practices
• Understand information needs of the CVO community,
• Document data availability to support a CVO information system, and
• Develop a framework for a Virginia CVO information system.
