Target Completion Date: May 15, 2019 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering
To date, transportation agencies have not aggressively taken advantage of the upcoming connected and automated vehicle environment to deliver travel-related information. There is a need to carefully investigate how the delivery of information to all roadway users (including drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists) currently provided by traffic control devices can be improved, or even fundamentally transformed, utilizing new technologies in connected and automated vehicles. This project will investigate the potential improvements in traffic control devices under a connected and automated vehicle environment. The focus of the research will be on signs and pavement markings; signals will not be included in this project due to their complexity and unique role. The effort will address emerging technology, document potential benefits, identify barriers to implementation, and propose a phased, prioritized plan to guide implementation.
