The Development of a Methodology for Measuring the Effectiveness of Safety Service Patrol Programs

Project No: 76827

Target Completion Date: June 29, 2006 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

Safety Service Patrols (SSPs) are deployed to identify incidents or disruptions on freeway systems and assist in clearing them to restore or to sustain full capacity to those systems. To compete for funding, SSPs need to show their value relative to cost. VDOT does not have a documented and tested methodology to quantify the effectiveness of SSPs. The purpose of this research is to develop such a metholology that VDOT decision-makers can use to evaluate its SSP programs.
