Synthesis of Benefits and Costs of Alternative Lane Marking Strategies

Project No: 88821

Target Completion Date: May 25, 2009 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

In this study, researchers will try to determine the best marking strategy for VDOT that provides adequate delineation during wet-night conditions and also is cost-effective.  The specific objectives of this project are to: (1) determine practices other states use for installing and maintaining snowplowable raised pavement markers (SRPMs); (2) identify the characteristics of different methods for providing wet-night visibility for pavement markings; and (3) assess the relative costs and benefits of implementing different marking strategies.  The results of this project will provide valuable information on the range of alternatives that are available as well as the relative benefits and costs of each option
