Target Completion Date: October 25, 2006 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering
A previously conducted study, “Development and Evaluation of a Calibration and Validation Procedure for Microscopic Simulation Models” developed a procedure for microscopic simulation model calibration and validation. Results showed that default parameters were unacceptable while calibrated parameters were able to replicate field conditions. The study report thus recommended that microscopic simulation models be calibrated and validated before they were used for any evaluations and analyses. However, the procedure developed in the earlier study was not readily usable by VDOT traffic engineers due to its extensive use of advanced statistical tools. It was also felt that the procedure should be tested on complex network conditions such as urban arterials and congested freeway systems. This study will conduct that testing, develop an easy to use guidebook for simulation model calibration and validation, and an accompanying short course to train VDOT engineers in its use.
