SHRP2 Tools for Assessing the Wider Economic Benefits of Transportation

Project No: 106521

Target Completion Date: October 30, 2016 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

This project, funded by the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2), will demonstrate and document the use of spreadsheet-based tools developed under a SHRP2 project for estimating economic benefits of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). SHRP2 is a Transportation Research Board program.

This project will assess planned and completed ITS projects along Interstate 64 between Richmond, Va., and Norfolk, Va. Planned projects include an expanded travel-time information program and ITS technology-gap closures. Completed ITS projects include a recent installation on a limited-access highway, which previously lacked ITS assets, and a recent effort to provide travel-time information for alternative routes to a key destination.

The SHRP2 economic analysis tools will provide additional criteria to help prioritize limited public funds and evaluate potential projects. It is anticipated that results of this project also will provide insight into prioritizing future ITS projects.
