Selection, Piloting, and Evaluation of Best Practices in Traffic Operations and Safety

Project No: 78971

Target Completion Date: June 30, 2007 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

A preliminary short-term study, requested by VDOT's State Traffic Engineer and completed in June of this year, looked at a number of traffic engineering practices in Europe to determine if any had practical application in the U.S., and, more specifically, in Virginia. The results of that study showed that a number of those practices indeed show promise. A follow-on, this new study is of great interest to VDOT’s District Traffic Engineers (DTEs). It will select practices (between 2 and 5) that we can pilot in Virginia, oversee those pilot applications, and evaluate the results. VDOT traffic engineering personnel will assist in reaching consensus as to practices that can be piloted. It is hoped that if the pilots are successful, statewide implementation may improve safety, reduce fatalities and injuries from accidents, improve operations, and/or decrease congestion. The TRP for the study, along with selected DTEs, will act as an advisory group for the effort.
