Target Completion Date: June 5, 2020 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering
Intersections are inherently risky as they represent the primary point of conflicting traffic movements. The potential problems created by intersections are exacerbated at nighttime; over half of traffic fatalities in the U.S. occur at night, although nighttime traffic represents only 25% of total travel on the nation’s roadway system. Roadway lighting has been widely used as a countermeasure for nighttime crashes. However, safety engineers and researchers frequently lack effective tools when determining exactly how lighting should be optimized to maximize safety while conserving energy. The main purpose of this project is to build on existing research and develop guidelines for intersection and midblock pedestrian crossing lighting design and warrants for use by VDOT. This guidelines will consider both the presence of lighting and the lighting level.
