Through a set of pooled-fund studies, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will work with federal, state, and local transportation agencies to establish a multi-phase program to support the development, field demonstration and deployment of IntelliDrive infrastructure applications.
IntelliDrive combines leading-edge technologies to facilitate communications between vehicles and the infrastructure. The exchange of information has the potential to significantly enhance safety by identifying potential hazards or conflicts and providing warnings to the drivers. From an infrastructure standpoint, the data generated from IntelliDrive will enable advances in both traffic management and system monitoring.
In the first phase, participants in this program will create an IntelliDrive infrastructure deployment plan, participate in developing an IntelliDrive business plan and complete applied research to create deployable Intellidrive infrastructure applications.
Future phases of the program will focus on large-scale field demonstrations of IntelliDrive infrastructure application and evaluation.
