Preparing to Use Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) in Transportation Operations – Phase II

Project No: 89085

Target Completion Date: April 24, 2009 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) has the potential to provide significant benefits to a wide variety of transportation applications.

Before VDOT can consider widespread VII implementation, it must fully evaluate VII’s effects on various aspects of its system operations.

This project will quantitatively study two aspects of VII and system operations: 1) the impact of VII probe data on operations applications, and 2) the impact of VII on VDOT's infrastructure investment decisions.

Based on insight gained from this research, VDOT will be in a strong position to influence national decisions on VII design/deployment. This applied research effort will help ensure VDOT is ready to take advantage of new capabilities that VII will provide. And finally, a clear understanding of the future of VII will help VDOT to make sound operations infrastructure investments today – ensuring that VDOT is ready to maximize the potential of VII in Virginia.
