Northern Region Travel-Time Demonstration Evaluation

Project No: 00025

Target Completion Date: October 30, 2013 Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering

About the project:

For several years, the Virginia Department of Transportation has been building the capability to display accurate travel-time information on dynamic message signs on key state corridors. The infrastructure is now in place to accomplish this, and a demonstration is planned for VDOT’s Northern Region.

VDOT will use data available through its agreement with INRIX, combined with data from the Northern Region Traffic Operations Center, to derive the travel-time estimates. As VDOT begins this effort, it will need to evaluate the quality of the travel-time messages to be posted on the signs.

To address that need, this project will:
    • Assess the quality of travel-time messages to be posted on the signs;
    • Assess rules for posting travel-time messages; and
    • Determine typical driver responses to the travel-time information.

To accomplish these objectives, the research team will collect data before and after the travel times are posted on the dynamic message signs.
